Finding Joy in the Things We’re “Not Good At”

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that we should only do things we’re good at. If we’re not great at painting, we shouldn’t paint. If we’re not athletic, we shouldn’t try a sport.

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that we should only do things we’re good at. If we’re not great at painting, we shouldn’t paint. If we’re not athletic, we shouldn’t try a sport. I used to shy away from hobbies for exactly that reason. Then one day, I tried something new—badly—and it was fun. It wasn’t about talent; it was about joy.

Now I’m embracing the beauty of being “not good” at things. I bake imperfect desserts, take photos that don’t look professional, and doodle goofy little sketches. It’s freeing to do something simply because it makes you happy. Life isn’t only about accomplishments; it’s also about curiosity, play, and the satisfaction of trying. We deserve hobbies that exist just for us.
