I had the pleasure of hosting a sprinkle for my dear friend Elsa. She’s due with a baby boy this winter and it was truly an honor to throw her a little party to celebrate baby boy’s upcoming arrival. We wanted to keep it small and simple with close friends for one afternoon. Elsa suggested we get everyone together to play mahjong and it ended up being the perfect activity.

Especially after the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it was nice to have a bit of a reprieve and just have some friend time. Elsa and I have been friends since I moved to the suburbs almost six years ago and it’s been fun to get to know more of her social circle over the years since she’s from here!

I didn’t want to go too over the top but, of course, wanted it to feel special and celebratory. I sent out Paperless Post invitations, hung up little onesies, and sprinkled flowers all over my office in these tiny vases. We ended up having two full tables of experienced players + a table of beginners. I brought in my friend Annie to help teach the beginners and lead them in a round of play.

It was mid-afternoon so I brought in some croissant sandwiches from Paris Baguette and petit fours from Woodland Bakery. Both were delicious and highly recommend if you’re in the area. Plus coffee and drinks. A random note but I got a few bottles of this alcohol-removed rose on a whim at our local wine store and I thought it was a pretty good alternative!

I made a supplemental card to play with and had a few prizes for the winners: one for the first mahjong, one for the first mahjong at the beginner table, and one for the first mahjong from the supplemental card. I made it on Canva from a template and spent a long time trying to come up with different lines that fit the “theme.” (Much harder than I expected– I have a newfound appreciation for the league now, haha.) I printed them at Staples and had them laminated so they’d work as cute tile shufflers, too. Definitely recommend doing something like this if you’re hosting a special mahjong event. This Etsy shop has some cute pre-made ones for a few different kinds of parties.
Loved celebrating Elsa– she deserves the world!!!
